Ihre aktuelle Herbst-Tournee durch Europa ist bereits weitestgehend gelaufen, wenn ihr dieses Heft in den , Hánden haltet. Und es besteht kaum ein Zweifel daran. dass URIAH HEEP auch anno '98 ihren Fans live wieder mal 'ne ainntliche Vollbedienung verpalsst haben. Zum Release des neuen Albums Sonic Origami' traf Mumpitz' Breuschl in Koln auf Gitarrist Mick Box, und Keyboarder Phil Lanzon.
Unter den "Überlebenden' der 70er nehmen UR1AH HEEP eine
Sonderstellung ein. Während man bis Mitte der 80er ständig die
Besetzung wechselte und u.a. auch zwei Todesfälle zu verkraften
halte (Bassist Gary Thain starb 1975, Sänger David Byron zehn
Jahre später), hat sich vor rund einem Dutzend Jahren e'm
Line-up herauskristallisiert, das bis heute unverändert besteht
und sowohl die Metal-Wellen der 80er als auch das Grunge- und
Knüppet-Zeifatter der 90er völlig unberührt überstanden hat.
Wenn man Mick und Phil sieht, weib man, warum: Die Jungs sind
humorvoll und relaxt, geben auch in ihrem siebzehntausendsten
Interview gescheite Antworten und sind gleichzeitig harte
Arbeiter, die ihren Fans vor allem durch ein ungewöhnuch
aufwendiges Touring entgegënkommen. So mancher Winkel dieses
Planeten hätte bis heute kaum e'me internationál erfolgreiche
Hardrockband zu sehen bekommen, wenn Heep sich nicht aufgëmacht
hätten, in Malaysia oder Uruguay die Kuh fliegen zu lassen.
Mick: »Alles in allem waren es, glaube ich, 47 verschiedene
Länder. Wir haben immer schon die ganze Welt als eine Bühne
betrachtet und nicht nur dort gespielt, wo die harten Währüngen
zu Hause sind. Von daher haben Pdr es auch viel früher als
andere gewagt, in Ruisland, der ehemaligen Tschechoslowakei oder
Südkorea aufzutreten. Diese Reisen haben fur uns wirklich was
Existentielles. Wir brauchen den direkten Kontakt zu den Leuten.
Als reine , Studioband würden wir wahrsche!nlich nicht lange
überleben können. Für uns ist es das Gesündeste. Es hilft
uns, den Motor konstant am Laufen zu halten.« Rein materiell
betrachtet: Würde es euch theoretisch reichen, alle paar Jahre
ein Album zu veröffentlichen, oder seid ihr auf das
Live-Standbein angewiesen?
Mick: »GrundsätzLich spielt Geld für uns
keine Rolle mehr. Die Tantiemen aus Mheren Jahren sichem uns
schon ab. Ginge es nur um Kohle, betrügst du dich auf Dauer
selbst.«
Phil: »Natürlich müssen auch Pvir unsere Kosten auf
Tourvorhergründlich durchkalkulieren. Crew, Trucking, Equipment
müssen sich schon rechnen.«
Und wie funktioniert das in Rusland?
Mick: » Wir bekommen in der Regel das Angebot einer Agentur,
checken alle Kosten durch und versuchen unser MögLichstes.
Manchmal musst du im Leben auch mal was zurückgeben. Wir haben
es schon oft erlebt, dass wir in derlei Ländem keinen Pfennig
verdie-nten. Aber
darauf kommt's auch nicht immer an.«
Die bodenständige, ehrliche Haltung ist die Basis der grundsoüden Rock'n'Roll Familie. Bandgründer Mick, der als einziger alle 28 Heep-Jahre mitgemacht hat: »Es gibt eigentlich nur ein Geheimnis, und das ist ein ganz offenes: Du musst die Band ständig unter Dampf halten. Solange dir das glückt, klappt auch der, Rest drumherum. Anders war’s da schon in den frühen Jahren, als wir zwar auch machtig Dampf gemacht haben, aber der Erfolg zu Verwerfungen führte. Das Geld, die Limousinen und die Bodyguards haben schon für Realitätsverluste und das eine oder andere Egoproblem gesorgt, keine Prage. Dann kommen die Eifersüchteleien, weil der eine meint, er dürfe nicht so idele Songs schreiben wie der andere, und ruckzuck ist der Dampf raus aus dem Kessel.«

Mittlerweile ist nicht nur Dampf, sondern auch planetenweite
KoordinaAntion vonnöten, wenn'sich die Herrschaften auch nur zu
einer Probe treffen wollen. Sitz der Band ist nach wie vor
London, aber die Wohnorte der Musikanten liegen bunt auf dem
Globus verstreut. So haben sich Mick und Phil im austraüschen
Sydney niedergelassen, Sänger Bernie Shaw bevorzugt den
berühmten Jahreszeitenwechsel auf Vancouver Island,Drummer Lee
Kerstake lebt auf Lanzarote, und Bassist Trevor Bolder pendelt
zwischen Hult in England und Dallas, der Heimat seiner Frau, hin
und her.
Wenn man so lange im Geschäft ist und derart global lebt und
denkt, spielen auch kurzfristige Trends, die in den Gazetten die
vorderen Seiten belegen, praktisch keine Rolle mehr.
Mick: »Wenn du anlängst, solchen Modeerscheinungen
hinterherzurennen, kannst du nur verlieren, denn iemand anderes
war vor dir da, der's besser kann.«
Was haltet ihr von all den jüngeren Acts, die sich 'm Interviews
über Bands wie euch lustig gemacht haben?
Phil: »Das sind doch nurKids. Die müssen so sein. Wenn Pete
Townshend in den 70cm in Interviews über die Bands der 50er
hergezogen ist, sah das nicht anders aus.«
Trends hin, Trends her: Die Heeps haben sich mit dem
ungewöhnäch spartanischen Coverdesign und dem Titel der neuen
Scheibe ein recht modern wirkendes Outfit zugelegt. Origami ist
bekanntlich die jäpanische Kunst des Papierfaltens, Sonic
Origami' demnach ein Werk aus zusammengefatteten Tönen...
Mick: »Der 7ïtel kam ursprünglich von unserem Producer, Pip
Wilhams. Wir waren m studio gerade in diverse Aufnahmedetails
verstrickt,

als er meinte: Okay, Jungs, ihr gehtjetzt mal 'n Bierchen trinken, und in der zwischenzeit mache ich hier ein bisschen Sonic Odgami.'Das war's einfach.«
Acht Wochen Recording Sessions plus anderthalb Wochen hinterm Mischpult waren nötig, um Sonic Origami' ins Silikonbett zu brennen'. diesem Zeitrahmen .iaben Def Leppard oder Metallica gerade mal eben ihr Schlagzeug aufgebaut. Dennoch bekamen URIAH HEEP am Ende sogar Probleme mit der Kapazität der CD, weit sie fur weit mehr als 80 Minuten Songs aufgenommen hatten. Geeinigt hat man sich dann untereinander am Ende mit einem »konstruktiven Kämpfchen«, wie Phil lachend feststellt. Mit Sicherheit fiel der Fight gerade eben so hart aus, dag im Kessel ausreichend Dampf für die nächsten zwei Jahre on the road übriggebleben ist...
