Pete Wharton.

Only had one & a bit listens SO far and Tapio is right, this does need more than one to fully appreciate everything that's going on, but this is great, we already have a difference of opinion about SO. Sorry Tapio, but I'm going to have to disagree with you big time about something. >CHANGE >After the best track on SO comes the worst. This is a piece of s**t! This track is brilliant. Until I got to the end of the CD, this was my favourite track. It flows great from Question and explains Question further and then goes back to the theme of Question. Brilliantly done. Love it to bits. Old Heep in a 90's Heep way. Excellent. >SWEET PRETENDER >The bonus track on limited edition. I don’t find it anything special. It’s a fast moving rock track so it brings a change to the songs that are mostly slow or >medium tempo, but there’s nothing really interesting in it. Oh Tapio, how could you. My next mail after this is to Mick to plead with him not to have this track dropped. Until I heard this, Change was my initial favourite off the album, but now hey whoa. How could they have thought of dropping this. I was sitting listening to SO on headphones last nght, analysing it and listening to it. My FIRST OVERALL impression was, "Yep it's OK, but where is the classic track that you want to sing along to and is going to make me choose to listen to this and not SOL?" Then I get Sweet Pretender and straight off I want to jump up and unplug the headphones and blast this one out. (I didn't, the wife was around and I'm not that suicidal !) Oh rock me rock me rock me. This is as near to classic rocking Heep as I've heard in a long time. OK maybe it's more suited to SOL than SO but hell it makes me want to rock my socks off. This is the track that clinches Sonic for me. I'm sorry to those who don't have SO yet, but I hope you get to hear Sweet Pretender. Last first impressions:
Bernie: Brilliant. If you don't rate Bernie's vocals after this album, you need treatment. Mick: Excellent. Seems like he's been able to concentrate on the guitar playing and not the myriad of other things he has to do. Phil: Nice to see the organ sound brought out more to the front again. Lee: Fortunately seems to have gone away from that horrible tinny cymbaly sound and back to the power drumming at last. Trevor: I need more listens but the bass seemed subdued. I hope not as I really like Trevor's playing.
There's a lot in this album that's going to grow on you and grow and grow. I'm afraid that "Across the miles" doesn't work for me, not yet anyway. Maybe that's one that will grow on me.
