As a U.S. Heep fan, I'm getting pretty damn sick and tired of having to pay
import prices for the new albums, but as long as they're as good as SoL and
SO, I'll have no choice.
As you've heard countless times, this one will grow on you. In fact, my first
time through, I didn't like it much at all. But now I listen to it
constantly! It is more pop-oriented than classic Heep, but every song has at
least something to catch the interest of the Heep fan. Even "Across the
Miles", by far the worst song on the disc, is catchy after a while.
My faves are "Between Two Worlds", "In the Moment", "Question" and "Sweet
Pretender", which should not be a bonus track, as I can't imaging SO ending
without it.
"Between Two Worlds" is an absolute classic. Honorable mention goes to
"Perfect Little Heart", a quirky little number, quite a departure. It's an
experiment that you will probably not appreciate on first listen. But stick
with it...this is a neat little song.
The biggest disappointment on the album is "Golden Palace". As someone said
on another site, this song "just lays there". I kept waiting for it to rev up
and kick in, but it never happened. Still not a bad song, but I hate "epics"
without time changes.
Basically, my feeling is this: SO is a really great Uriah Heep disc as long
as you stick with it. If I'd filed it away after the first time hearing it,
as I was almost tempted to do, I'd have missed one of the best albums of '98.
If you're a Heep fan, don't hesitate to buy this one.
