Mac Steagall
I've had SO since this morning and I believe I'm on my sixth listen.
Let me say right off that Rod was correct with his assessment...I
was disappointed with my first listen of SO. Understand I had already
heard five songs on the CD in advance and I liked all 5 of them. My
first impression was that as SO would have been improved by dropping
off some of the songs. My impression has improved considerably since
the first listen.
I can say I absolutely love six of the songs....
Between Two Worlds...to me this is the best of new Heep. It is 70s
style rock filled with Heep trademarks. It kicks out heavy with Heep bgv's
and then goes mellow and comes back heavy with a frantic guitar solo by Mick.
Alex will probably gag when he reads this, but Mick's last 20 seconds of
solo reminds me of the frantic ending to Freebird. Absolute dynamite...the
clip
doesn't do justice to this one...
I Hear Voices...This one would fit right in on SOL...excellent, heavy
guitar riff! Bernie's voice sounds like it been run through some special
effects. Heavy sound matches perfectly with the lyrics about insanity.
Great atmosphere and excellent harmony vocals...
Questions...another one the clip doesn't do justice to...Nice acoustic guitar
number with a nice melody and harmonies. The slight variation in the melody
at the end makes the song...and the seriousness of the lyrics..."Are you
ready to die for love?" Then it goes straight into
Changes...A upbeat tempo, Trevor's bass is really moving... reminds me of a
Who song off Tommy for some reason. It also has some some nice bgv's. I
think at one point that Trevor is trading off verses with Bernie...and
during the break I hear that unusual bgv's that Heep did on Abominog. Then
here comes back Questions reprise with new lyrics..."The incredible gift of
life".I have goose bumps again...
Right in Shelter From the Rain...a dreamy, flowing blues ballad...Smooth as
silk with Micks guitar lead in and Trevor's melodic bass and layered
background vocals. Nice lyrics also. Mick plays an excellent blues guitar
solo btw...
Everything in Life...one I hear on tape before. How can you not love it? It
screams Heep...Same shuffle tempo as Easy Livin', Look at Yourself and Time
of Revelation. Lots of hammond, active bass and background vocals...
Now the songs I like alot...
Heartless Land...Top 40 style song with a great melody but you can't help
but sing the lyrics.
Feels Like...80s style rock song, pretty heavy.
The Golden Palace...nice elaborate ballad...some nice keyboards.
Sweet Pretender...a relatively heavy song. This one is growing on me...
In the Moment...Strong chorus....it's also a grower...
Now the one's that are ok but I'm having some trouble getting into...
Perfect Little Heart...reminds of a song off Different World except a
little better. Stand Back, maybe?
Only the Young...also reminds of DW type song but the chorus is pretty heavy
sounding, It's growing on me.And I like that bridge part. I think it's Trevor
switching off lines with Bernie there as well.
Across the Miles...Not bad for a cover. I actually prefer it to PLH I think.
