Gary Brines
Fellow Heepsters,
In many ways, this is the most ambitious Heep album
ever. It spans a wider range of styles than any previous Heep release. Give
the guys credit for moving forward, instead of pretending it's still 1973.
Like all the other post-Hensley releases, it's very
good but not great. The overall mix is relatively tame; it lacks the clarity
and punch of SOL. Also, the rhythm section dynamics aren't as hot as they
usually are. And finally, before moving on to the good aspects of this CD, it
must be noted that two of the songs here kinda' suck: "Perfect Little Heart"
sounds like a mediocre INXS song from ten years ago, with it's cute little
guitar riff and dorky vocal melodies. And "Across The Miles" is even worse,
unless you happen to be a Journey or Survivor fan. I'm sure the band's wives,
girlfriends, and daughters love this song, but I don't.
Fortunately, most of the songs are damn good,
especially "Only The Young" and "In The Moment". These two, along with
"Everything In Life" and "Sweet Pretender", must be included in the new live
set, please!
Bottom line: a notch below "Sea Of Light", but well
worth the $30.43 I paid for it. Buy it if you haven't already, but make sure
your copy includes the bonus track "Sweet Pretender", it's a good one.
